I met Madhu Kapur before I read her first book. Describing Virmati would be similar to describing any girl of diffixult same age; young, enthusiastic, adventurous, vibrant and highly emotional. Some of this has continued even in the 21st century so it felt a little familiar. I also thought Kapur should have expanded a little more on the life of Virmati’s daughter, the narrator.

The book is set in the pre independence era leading up to the Partition. It can be painful.

This paper is a diatribe against the patriarchal rules prevalent in India.
She then becomes romantically involved with a college lecturer, and that romantic engagement paves the way to further education. Therefore there is a lot of fore-shadowing and we pretty much know where the story is going and how it is going to end.
